A Day in the Life at Fen Mobility Centre

At Fen Mobility Centre, every day feels a little bit different and that’s exactly how we like it. Between test drives, emergency calls, and a good dose of friendly chatter, here’s a peek behind the scenes of what a “normal” day can look like for us.

Morning: Showroom, Scooters & Customer Chats

We open our doors just outside Ely bright and early. First on the agenda is preparing the showroom, wheelchairs, riser-recliners, walking aids, and especially scooters. Some customers browse for a new boot scooter for quick trips to shops, while others are after a heavier, road-legal model for longer journeys or rural trips.

Today, a lovely regular from a village near Cambridge popped in for a test ride. She’d been debating between a compact travel scooter (easy to fold for car trips) and a mid-size with more stability and comfort. After a gentle tour of the aisle, she ended up choosing the mid-size perfect for the mixed pavements and occasional gravel she’d encounter around Cambridge suburbs.

We believe strongly in letting people try before they buy: test drives help reveal features that specs alone can’t show (suspension, turning radius, comfort...) and often lead to “aha” moments.

Late Morning: Repairs, Services & Happy (Sometimes Frazzled) Tech Time

In the workshop, it’s not unusual to have half a dozen scooters and wheelchairs in for servicing or repair. Recently, we had one scooter in for a full service, new battery, brake check, tyre pressure, wiring inspection so the owner wouldn’t get stranded mid-journey. Regular check-ups like this keep scooters safe and reliable.

Then there are the “uh-oh” moments. Like when we got a call from a customer stuck outside a shop in Ely having lost his scooter key. Cue the mad dash into Ely with a box of spares to try.

Lunch usually involves a cuppa and a chat about upcoming home visits or deliveries.

Afternoon: On the Road Deliveries, Demonstrations & Home Visits

After lunch we load up the van: a new wheelchair for a customer in Huntingdon, a foldable scooter for someone in Wisbech, and a couple of walking aids destined for homes around King’s Lynn. We’ve proudly served Cambridgeshire, Fenland, West Suffolk, King’s Lynn and surrounding areas for over 30 years.

One memorable call came mid-afternoon: a gentleman who’d just returned home from hospital and needed a walk-in commode seat installed that day so he could stay independent while recovery continued. We unloaded in the pouring rain, talked through safe installation, and made sure he felt comfortable using it before we left. Moments like that really remind us why we do what we do.

Evening: Wrap-Up, Booking Repairs, Dreams of Tea

Back at the centre, we tidy the workshop, log today’s service records, call customers to confirm next-day deliveries, and check tomorrow’s schedule. We know some scooters will need batteries recharged, some wheelchairs new tyres, and some follow-up consultation visits with our on-site occupational therapist.

Why We Love (and Keep Doing) What We Do

  • Because mobility is more than wheels it’s freedom, dignity, and being part of the community.

  • Because every corridor, street or village between Ely, Cambridge, West Suffolk, King’s Lynn, Huntingdonshire and Fenland deserves to be accessible.

  • Because our customers don’t just buy scooters they trust us to care, fix, advise, deliver and sometimes rescue.

  • Because there’s always a story waiting: a smile when a scooter that wouldn’t start begins humming again; a relieved sigh when we rescue someone stranded; or the delighted laughter when a new rolling chair transforms a home routine.

If you’d like to come visit or need help, advice or a home demo just give us a call.
