Tyres do not sound like the most exciting part of choosing a mobility scooter, but they have a real effect on ride comfort, maintenance and confidence. The two broad options people usually encounter are pneumatic tyres filled with air and solid or puncture-proof tyres.
Neither is automatically best. The right choice depends on where you travel, how much maintenance you want and how sensitive you are to vibration.
What are pneumatic tyres?
Pneumatic tyres contain air, much like traditional bicycle or car tyres. The air provides some cushioning as the wheel moves over small bumps and surface imperfections.
That can contribute to a more comfortable ride, particularly on larger scooters and rougher routes.
What are solid tyres?
Solid tyres do not rely on air pressure, so they cannot suffer a conventional puncture. Designs vary, including solid rubber and other puncture-resistant constructions.
Their big attraction is reassurance. There is no inner air chamber to lose pressure after a thorn, screw or sharp piece of debris.
Comfort
Pneumatic tyres generally have an advantage in absorbing small shocks because the air itself provides cushioning. On rough paving, that can be noticeable.
Solid tyres can transmit more vibration, although suspension, wheel size, seat design and scooter construction also have a major effect. You cannot judge the complete ride from tyre type alone.
Punctures
This is the obvious strength of solid tyres. If you regularly travel far from home, the thought of a puncture can be worrying.
Pneumatic tyres can puncture and need correct pressure. For some users, that maintenance is a reasonable price for improved ride quality. Others value puncture resistance more.
Tyre pressure
Pneumatic tyres need to be kept at the correct pressure specified for the scooter and tyre. Under-inflation can affect handling, tyre wear and range because the scooter has to work harder.
Check pressure with a suitable gauge rather than relying entirely on how the tyre looks.
Grip
Grip depends on tyre design, compound, tread, condition and surface, not simply whether the tyre is solid or pneumatic.
Whichever type you have, worn or damaged tyres deserve attention.
Range and rolling resistance
Incorrectly inflated pneumatic tyres can increase rolling resistance and reduce useful range. Solid tyres remove the pressure-maintenance issue, but the overall efficiency still depends on the scooter and tyre design.
Small boot scooters
Many compact scooters use puncture-proof tyres because simplicity and low maintenance fit the way they are used. On smooth shopping-centre floors and reasonable pavements, that can work very well.
If you regularly travel over rough surfaces, test the ride rather than assuming every small scooter will feel the same.
Larger outdoor scooters
Larger scooters may use pneumatic tyres, solid options or more sophisticated combinations with suspension. Bigger wheel diameter itself can help the scooter roll over imperfections more smoothly.

If vibration aggravates pain, tyre choice is one part of the picture. Suspension, seat support, posture and route surface may be equally or more important.
Spend enough time on the scooter to feel how it behaves over real paving.

- Keep pneumatic tyres at the specified pressure.

The easiest comparison is to drive scooters over the same imperfect surface. A few paving joints and a dropped kerb will tell you more than a long discussion about tyre technology.
