A mobility scooter is only as useful as the battery system that powers it. Batteries are also one of the parts customers ask us about most often, usually when range has dropped, a scooter has been left unused or somebody is unsure how often it should be charged.
Good battery care is not complicated, but the right advice depends on the type of battery and the scooter. Always follow the instructions supplied with your equipment and use the correct charger.
Why mobility scooter batteries eventually need replacing
Rechargeable batteries do not last forever. Every charge and discharge cycle contributes to gradual ageing. Heat, cold, long periods in a discharged state and general use all influence service life.
The usual sign is not that a battery works perfectly one day and is completely dead the next. More often, useful range gradually becomes shorter.
Common battery types
Sealed lead-acid batteries
Many mobility scooters use sealed lead-acid battery technology, including AGM or gel variants. These are well established and robust when used with the correct charging system.
Lithium batteries
Many lightweight and folding scooters use lithium battery packs because they can provide useful capacity at lower weight. Lithium systems have their own charging, storage and transport requirements.
Do not assume batteries or chargers are interchangeable simply because a connector fits. Use equipment specified for the scooter.
Should I charge after every journey?
For many scooters, regular charging after use is a sensible routine, particularly when the scooter is used frequently. The manufacturer's instructions should take priority because battery systems vary.
The key principle is to avoid repeatedly leaving batteries in a heavily discharged condition.
How long should charging take?
Charging time depends on battery capacity, how much charge has been used and the charger. A larger battery bank that has been heavily discharged will naturally take longer than a small battery pack after a short trip.
Rather than relying on one universal number, learn the normal behaviour of your charger and scooter. If charging suddenly takes much longer or appears to finish unusually quickly while range has dropped, have the system checked.
Use the correct charger
A charger is part of the battery system, not just a generic plug. Incorrect voltage, charging profile or connector arrangements can damage equipment and create a safety risk.
If a charger is lost or damaged, replace it with the correct approved specification rather than choosing something that merely looks similar.
What if the scooter is not used for weeks?
Long-term storage is where many batteries suffer. A scooter parked with partly discharged batteries and forgotten for months may be very reluctant to return to normal service.
Follow the storage charging guidance for your particular scooter. Keep the equipment in a suitable environment and check it periodically rather than waiting until the day you need it.
Cold garages and sheds
Mobility scooters need practical storage, but very cold or damp environments are not ideal for batteries and electrical equipment. If the scooter lives in an outbuilding, think about temperature, moisture and access to safe charging.
Never create unsafe charging arrangements with unsuitable extension leads or improvised wiring simply because the storage space is inconvenient.
Why has my range dropped?
- Normal battery ageing.
- Cold weather.
- More hills or a more demanding route.
- Lower tyre pressure where pneumatic tyres are fitted.
- Extra load.
- A charger or connection problem.
- The scooter having been stored discharged.
- Mechanical drag or another fault making the motor work harder.
This is why we prefer to test rather than automatically sell batteries. Replacing batteries will not fix a charger fault or a mechanical problem.
Replacing batteries as a matched set
Many scooters use two batteries working together. Where that is the design, replacement normally needs to be considered as a matched pair rather than mixing an old battery with a new one.
The exact specification matters. Physical size alone is not enough.
Can I fit a bigger battery for more range?
Sometimes a scooter platform supports different approved capacities, but you should not assume there is space or that the charger and electronics are suitable.
Extra capacity also adds weight. On a boot scooter, that may affect the very portability you bought it for.
Battery weight matters on portable scooters
A removable battery box can be one of the heavier pieces you lift into the car. When choosing a portable scooter, try removing and carrying it.
Lithium packs can reduce weight on some designs, but the overall scooter and lifting method still need to be practical.
Air travel and lithium batteries
If you plan to fly with a mobility scooter, battery type and rating become especially important. Airlines have procedures for mobility aids and lithium batteries, and requirements can vary.
Contact the airline well before travel with the exact scooter and battery information. Do not leave this until check-in.
What not to do
- Do not use an unapproved charger because the plug happens to fit.
- Do not leave a scooter deeply discharged for long periods.
- Do not cover a charger in a way that prevents normal ventilation.
- Do not charge in an unsuitable wet environment.
- Do not ignore damaged cables, plugs, battery cases or unusual heat.
- Do not buy replacement batteries solely by dimensions without checking the correct specification.
When to ask the workshop to check it
If range has fallen significantly, the scooter cuts out under load, charging behaviour has changed or you are unsure whether the batteries are at fault, a proper check can save money.
Battery testing makes most sense in the context of the whole scooter. Connections, charger operation and general condition may all be relevant.
A simple battery routine
- Use the scooter normally rather than worrying about every small change on the gauge.
- Charge according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Use only the correct charger.
- Store the scooter and batteries in suitable conditions.
- Follow the correct routine during periods of non-use.
- Notice changes in familiar range.
- Have unexpected deterioration investigated.
